PSALM 23 - PART FOUR
This week we continue our series on Psalm 23. We talk about how the anointing of Christ renews our mind to empower us for our calling.
The mind is the battlefield of our soul. We are led by our thoughts, and if the enemy can dominate our mind, our feet will eventually follow. So it is important to keep our mind full of the thoughts of heaven. In this verse David knew he had a Shepherd and he needed Him to anoint his head with oil so he could overcome his enemies and lead the life God had for him. David needed his mind filled with God’s truth and God’s thoughts. “Anoint” translates in the New Testament to mean Christ, so David is literally saying that his head is anointed with the thoughts of Christ.
1 John 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will[a] abide in Him.
We have to receive the anointing of God continually to refresh and renew it in our lives so it can be effective. You cannot live in yesterday’s anointing. When you have that anointing in your thinking it will guide you to your calling. We need the anointing to learn, be equipped and be empowered throughout our lives. Assurance comes from knowing that through the anointing we have a power of heaven within us to change us from the ordinary to the extraordinary.
2 Cor 1:21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God
We are powerless without the influence of the Holy Spirit and it is only Christ’s anointing that can empower us without burning out. We need to keep being refilled with the fresh oil so that we aren’t getting burnt out or broken. The anointing keeps us functioning both spiritually and within our relationships – rejuvenating our way of living.
Here are some characteristics of the Anointing:
1. It Is A Tangible Spiritual Force
Mark 5:30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
The anointing is released when we believe. It bridges the gap between our inadequacies and Christ’s perfection. God relies on our weaknesses as they are where his glory and power are manifested and revealed.
2. The Anointing Breaks Fixations
Isaiah 10:27 In that day their burden will be lifted from your shoulders, their yoke from your neck; the yoke will be broken because you have grown so fat.
When that anointing comes on you it breaks every chain off your life. We get bound in our way of thinking if we allow fixations to bind themselves in our minds. The anointing will triumph over any power negatively impacting your life.
3. There Are Various Kinds Of Anointing
The anointing empowers you to do whatever you are called to do. With the call comes a power and wisdom to do the impossible – God will not give you any task without empowering you. Through empowering you God will empower others.
Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Jesus healed everyone who was oppressed from the enemy because of his anointing from god. The same anointing that empowered Him empowers you.
